Down syndrome can now be detected as early as 10 weeks gestation through a simple, non-invasive blood test called MaterniT21, explains prostate cancer expert Dr. David Samadi. This new test is recommended for high-risk moms, including those over age 40. Typically, abnormalities in the fetus' heart or neck seen during ultrasound indicate the potential presence of Down syndrome. This new blood test could precede amniocentesis in detecting Down syndrome with 99% accuracy. If positive, the blood test should be followed by amniocentesis for confirmation.Views: 271
