Potential to Grow Custom Organs

Doctors David Samadi and Marc Siegel of the FOX News Medical A Team talk about a new breakthrough in organ decellularization that could save thousands of lives.

According to Dr. Siegal, approximately 110,000 people are currently on a waiting list to receive replacement organs and the primary limitation is finding an organ that will be compatible with the recipient. He goes on to state that Dr. Harald Ott at Massachusetts General Hospital has devised a method by which a donor organ can be stripped of cell tissue that could lead to rejection in the recipient and rebuild the organ using the recipients own stem cells, resulting in a perfect match. Dr. Siegal adds that while this method is still far from being perfected, it may see fruits within the next few years, in the form of a "patch" that could defer the immediate need for a transplant.

Dr. Samadi estimates that once perfected, a custom organ of this kind could be ordered, created and delivered in as little as 6 weeks. He points out that the implications of such an advancement are tremendous, as patients would no longer have to wait to receive organ transplants, nor would they need to spend the rest of their lives in immunosupressants.

Dr. Siegal closes by adding that testing of this method is currently on-going using both human and pig tissue.
