Dr. David Samadi, explains the importance of thyroid screening in pregnant woman and those of child-bearing age. Thyroid problems are most common in women, particularly those with a family history of thyroid gland issues. A recent study of 500,000 pregnant woman found that 15% had an under active thyroid. Low thyroid issues in pregnant women can increase risk of miscarriage and reduce IQs in children. Thyroid issues can be safely treated during pregnancy, but should be explored prior to pregnancy - particularly in women over 30, those with thyroid symptoms, Type 1 diabetes, obesity, and family risk factors. Prenatal vitamins must include iodine.
