Dr. David Samadi of the Fox News “Medical A-Team” and Vice Chair of the Urology department at Mt. Sinai Medical Center discusses skin cancer screening during the winter months.

Skin cancer is the most common of all cancer types in the US. Over 1,000,000 people in the US will be diagnosed with the disease this year. It’s estimated that if you live to be the age of 65 that over half of the population will have a form of skin cancer at some point in their lives.

Normally people only worry about skin cancer during the summer months when they tend to receive more exposure to the sun. That exposure does not stop during the winter months though, and precautions should be taken all year round.

There are three types of skin cancer, Basal Cell Carcinoma, Squamous Cell Carcinoma, and Melanoma. The Carcinomas are identified as round, symmetrical, fleshy and scaley looking areas on your skin. These forms of the disease have a very high cure rate if caught early. Melanoma is more serious and can be identified as asymmetric in shape with irregular borders, over 6mm in diameter, and made up of multiple colors in the lesion.

Knowing how to protect yourself is key to preventing skin cancer. Avoid sun exposure, properly cover your skin, and wear a waterproof sunscreen on the areas that are not covered. If you see any suspicious lesions on your body consult your doctor.
