Prostate cancer treatment expert Dr. David Samadi gives men the gift of knowledge this Father's Day as he provides information about the importance of PSA testing and prostate cancer screening. A PSA (or Prostate Specific Antigen) test is a simple blood test that can be done on an annual basis that can be used to help determine a patient's risk for prostate cancer. Dr. Samadi suggests that all men start receiving PSA tests regularly starting at the age of 45. For those who have a family history of, or other risk factors for, prostate cancer should start being tested at age 40.

By getting a baseline reading at this age, and by going for regular annual testing afterward, your doctor is able to compare your PSA values and monitor for abnormal changes. A drastic rise in PSA values over time may indicate that a biopsy of the prostate is necessary to test for cancer.

While the effectiveness of PSA testing has been questioned in the media as of late, Dr. Samadi is a firm believer that PSA testing has indeed helped to reduce prostate cancer mortality rates. Dr. Samadi frequently states that PSA testing alone is not enough to make a prostate cancer diagnosis; however, when used in conjunction with other tests and an overview a patient's family history, it becomes an invaluable tool in the fight against prostate cancer.
