Dr. Samadi explains the new AUA prostate cancer screening guidelines and how patients should interpret them. Overdiagnosis is a common concern about the PSA test, but Dr. Samadi points out that it shouldn't lead to overtreatment. Elevated PSA levels should be considered in the context of family history and other prostate cancer risk factors, under the guidance of a prostate cancer expert. Dr. Samadi addresses the new guidelines against testing younger men by citing the large volume of men in his own practice with advanced prostate cancer in their early 40s. Dr. Samadi encourages early testing, stating that 30% of prostate cancer cases prove understaged and undergraded in post-surgery analysis. Improved genetic screening and prostate cancer testing are needed, Dr. Samadi stresses.
