Best Father's Day Gift? A Prostate Quiz!

New York, NY, June 4, 2013 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Father's Day is the perfect time to give Dad a little extra love. What do dads love? Playing golf, tickets to the big game, a homemade card, sometimes even a new tie. What do they dread? Going to the doctor. That's where the kids come in. Dads of all ages need to be reminded to take care of themselves, and prostate health tops the list, says world-renowned robotic prostate surgeon, Dr. David Samadi.

Dr. Samadi, Chief of Robotics and Minimally Invasive Surgery and Vice Chairman of the Department of Urology at The Mount Sinai Medical Center, challenges everyone to add a twist to their Father's Day fun with a prostate cancer prevention and prostate cancer screening quiz. "Dad's need a push," he says. "Just get Dad to the doctor for his annual physical, complete with a routine PSA (prostate-specific antigen) test. A year can pass quickly, so Father's Day or Dad's birthday are the perfect times for this little reminder."

If your dad is over 40, ask him these life-saving prostate cancer questions:

1)    When was your last PSA test? When is your next?

Dr. Samadi recommends all men get a baseline PSA test before age 50 and continue with annual screenings. This simple blood test gives valuable information each year.

2)    What is your prostate cancer family history? Did Grandpa or Uncle Joe have prostate cancer? If so, at what age were they diagnosed?

A family history of prostate cancer significantly increases Dad's risk. Men of African American decent are at increased risk, as well. These men should get their first PSA test by age 40 and work with a prostate cancer expert for a long-term screening plan.

3)    Are you exercising regularly?

It doesn't take much, but the more you can involve Dad in stress-fighters like bike riding, sports, and even dog-walking, the better off he'll be. Obesity is a major risk factor for prostate cancer.

4)    Do you eat lots of cancer-fighters like fish, broccoli, spinach, and tomatoes (pasta sauce and pizza count!)?

In addition to helping Dad maintain a healthy weight, many foods provide cancer-fighting nutrients such as lycopene and phytochemicals that optimize prostate health and overall wellness.

5)    Are you limiting saturated fats and processed meats?

Dad deserves a good meal on Father's Day, but remind him that less is more when it comes to certain foods like red meat, hot dogs, and deli meats.

6)    Do you get up at night to use the bathroom?

We tease Dad about becoming an old man, but changes in urinary habits are among the very few noticeable signs of prostate cancer. Make sure he doesn't ignore anything out of the ordinary.

As a globally recognized robotic prostate surgeon, Dr. Samadi has successfully treated more than 4,500 men with prostate cancer. While the disease cannot yet be prevented, a healthy lifestyle and appropriate vigilance of personal risk factors goes a long way. "When we find prostate cancer early and treat it with definitive measures like robotic prostate surgery, we save lives," stresses Dr. Samadi, whose SMART (Samadi Modified Advanced Robotic Technique) surgery delivers superior quality of life post treatment.

This June 16th, make sure Dad enjoys many more years with you, his loving, sometimes pestering, kids.

On Jan. 26, 2011 when I had my prostate removed you told me I would soon be able to resume my normal activities. This past Sunday my wife and I completed a half marathon together. What a wonderfull experience we shared, thanks to you I am doing what I was able to do prior to my diagnosis and I am working to continue to improve.
