Robotic Prostate Surgery Gets High Marks in Patient Satisfaction

NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwired - Jan 28, 2014) - The majority of men who undergo robotic prostate surgery in the hands of an experienced surgeon are satisfied with the results. The patients of leading robotic prostate surgeon, David B. Samadi, MD, are featured in a new study on decisional regret after robotic-assisted laparoscopic prostatectomy (RALP). Nearly 90 percent of Dr. Samadi's patients remain satisfied with their prostate cancer treatment decision more than a year post-surgery.

As Chairman of Urology and Chief of Robotic Surgery at Lenox Hill Hospital, Dr. Samadi is widely regarded for his custom RALP, the Samadi Modified Advanced Robotic Technique (SMART). By combining his unique nerve sparing techniques with the enhanced dexterity and 3D visualization of the da Vinci Surgical robot, Dr. Samadi delivers superior post-treatment quality of life to his patients.
"The surgery is only as good as the surgeon," reminds Dr. Samadi, who has performed more than 5,600 successful robotic prostate surgeries to date. Success for his patients means a 97 percent prostate cancer cure rate. With adherence to post-surgical recommendations, 96 percent of Dr. Samadi's patients regain urinary control in just two to three months and 85 percent regain sexual potency within 12-24 months. Dr. Samadi is one of few surgeons experienced in open, laparoscopic, and robotic prostatectomy surgery.

Among the study participants, African American men reported a reduced level of treatment satisfaction. Despite commonalities in the functional, clinical, and pathologic features of these men, roughly 10 percent more African American men than white men felt regret about choosing RALP.

"There is still progress to be made in the early screening and diagnoses of African American men," explained Dr. Samadi. "With a 70 percent higher prostate cancer prevalence, this population needs to be extremely vigilant about routing screening. Patient education is critical for these men."

In 2012, a similar decisional regret study of Dr. Samadi's patients reported an 88 percent satisfaction RALP rate at 11.1 months post-surgery. In the newly published study, 90 percent of patients report satisfaction at a median of 16.6 months post-RALP. Beyond race, variables in post-operative satisfaction include sexual dysfunction, urinary control, and length of hospital stay.

"Pre- and post-operative variables among patients continue to impact surgical results," said Dr. Samadi. "My team and I are encouraged to see patient satisfaction with SMART Surgery improving and we will continue to educate men and their partners about the importance of aligning with experienced prostate cancer specialists for definitive treatment."
