September Second Opinions: Free Prostate Cancer Consults in NYC

NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwired - Sep 10, 2013) - Each September, leading robotic prostate surgeon, Dr. David B. Samadi, lends his expertise to men with prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test results in hand. During Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, men are invited to schedule a free, one-on-one consultation with Dr. Samadi, during which he will offer his expert counsel on PSA levels, prostate cancer treatment options, and next steps.

"News of an elevated PSA level can be concerning," acknowledges Dr. Samadi, robotic prostate surgeon and Chairman of Urology, Chief of Robotic Surgery at Lenox Hill Hospital. "But, the PSA is just a first step. The second step is education, followed by further exploration. My goal is to help men understand what their results mean, and guide them through the options ahead."

Often debated, the prostate-specific antigen PSA test is not a definitive diagnostic tool, but an indicator of the potential presence of prostate cancer. When elevated PSA levels are detected, particularly when charted over a period time, a digital rectal exam (DRE) and prostate biopsy often follow. The cumulative results of those tests are used to diagnose a man's prostate cancer, with the goal of establishing the disease's exact location (stage) and aggressiveness (Gleason score).

Prostate Cancer Awareness Month is also a callout to men who are not yet in the habit of annual PSA testing. Spouses, partners, and children are encouraged to send the men they love for a simple PSA blood test.

Dr. Samadi and his team offer up this "LIST" of prostate cancer reminders:

LEARN Risk - Prostate cancer risk increases with a family history of the disease, and in those who are African American, over age 65, or obese. Discuss key risk factors with your urologist.

IMPROVE Health - Exercise and diet are surefire ways to improve overall health and reduce prostate cancer risk. Look for foods containing antioxidants and sulforaphane.

SCREEN Annually - High risk or not, get an annual PSA test starting at age 50. If you fall into one or more risk categories, Dr. Samadi recommends starting at age 40 and continuing annually under the guidance of a prostate cancer expert.

TREAT Aggressively - Robotic prostate surgery and radiation are leading prostate cancer treatment options, but there's a lot to learn about each. Second opinions are invaluable when determining treatment.

This summer, Dr. Samadi transitioned to the Lenox Hill Hospital Prostate Cancer Center in New York. His dedication to the PSA test, early diagnosis, and swift and definitive treatment remain steadfast. "Continuing the September second opinion tradition from our new post was important to me and my team," he said.

In 2008 my husband was diagnosed with Prostate cancer with a PSA of 31.8 and a Gleason Score of 9. When we first got the news we immediately began to research different doctors and new techniques in our home country of the Netherlands and throughout Europe.

I am aware of the fact that it takes a extraordinarily rare surgeon to be the master of Robotic Laparoscopic Radical Prostatectomy.  I watched the video released by the Henri Mondor hospital before my surgery, and once again today. Although you make it seem easy to the patients and their families, your accomplishment is nearly superhuman.
