New York Students Watch Live Robotic Prostate SMART Surgery
NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwired - Jul 15, 2014) - Robotic prostate surgeon, David B. Samadi, MD and Lenox Hill
Hospital in New York hosted the 2014 National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine (NYLF/MED) kickoff event on July 10, 2014. Student participants received a firsthand look at Dr. Samadi's SMART Surgery for prostate cancer, the Samadi Modified Advanced Robotic Technique. The event marked the start of a ten-day elite program for academically outstanding high school students in the tri-state area.
For the third year in a row, David Samadi, MD, Chairman of Urology and Chief of Robotic Surgery at Lenox Hill Hospital, welcomed New York NYLF/MED students to witness his custom robotic prostate surgery via closed circuit TV. Each year Dr. Samadi's surgery serves as the opening event as he joins students to share his expertise in prostate cancer treatment and urologic oncology.
"I love being a part of this tradition with the Leadership Forum," said Dr. Samadi. "Each year I am amazed at the students' level of understanding and insight. They get a firsthand look at robotic prostate surgery that few others have seen, and they develop a true appreciation for how beneficial the procedure can be for patient recovery from prostate cancer."
This year's NYLF/MED students observed the real-time procedure at The Prostate Cancer Center at Lenox Hill Hospital via closed circuit TV. Following the surgery, Dr. Samadi joined the students for a Q&A discussion about prostate cancer, robotic surgery, and life as a surgeon.
The elite NYLF/MED program consists of exceptional high school students who are interested in pursuing careers in healthcare. Chosen based on teacher nominations, recommendations, and outstanding academic performance in math and science, the students participate in unique opportunities to meet and observe experts from top hospitals and medical centers throughout the program. The National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine has a 20-year history in the United States.
"I've been involved with the program since its inception in New York and each year I look forward to meeting the new students. It's a tremendous program and I see interacting with these future medical leaders as an integral part of our growing field," said Dr. Samadi.
The NYLF/MED program is designed to give students a real-world view of medical advancements, the healthcare environment, and the daily responsibilities and challenges facing physicians and surgeons. As in previous years, Dr. Samadi's live SMART Surgery was highly sought after and well attended.
