Prostate Cancer Treatment: It Takes A Team

NEW YORK, Aug. 8, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- A recent study published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology reported that men who seek prostate cancer treatment from a team of specialists are more likely to defer treatment, a decision they extrapolated to mean better care. While you won't find Dr. David Samadi, leading robotic prostate cancer surgeon, and his colleagues at Mount Sinai Medical Center making the same blanket statement about postponing prostate cancer treatment, they are certainly in agreement that team trumps all.

The options for battling prostate cancer run the gamut from robotic prostate removal surgery; various forms of radiation, such as HIFU or brachytherapy; hormone deprivation therapy; and even non-treatment in the form of active surveillance or watchful waiting. Getting to the facts and making the right choice can be difficult for many patients.

The notion that men with prostate cancer will receive better care and better advice by calling on the counsel of a team of multidisciplinary physicians is hard to argue with. Though as logical as it may seem, not all patients take that approach.

"This study serves as a solid reminder of the importance of medical expertise," said Dr. Samadi, "Every stage of prostate cancer – from PSA monitoring, to diagnosis, to treatment and long-term support – deserves the highest quality care available."

Dr. Samadi has performed over 4,000 successful robotic prostatectomy procedures and developed the innovative SMART (Samadi Modified Advanced Robotic Technique) surgery for improved outcomes and faster recovery. He operates with the same dedicated team of surgical professionals each time at Mount Sinai, and he performs each surgery himself from start-to-finish.

"The concept of team is vital to success. My surgical team ensures optimal results and the team of specialists at Mount Sinai ensures patients receive quality care from an esteemed center of excellence," stresses Dr. Samadi.

Patients in Dr. Samadi's care not only have the benefit of his vast experience and high level of surgical skill, they also have access to the more experienced urologists, cancer specialists, and imaging experts available. Dr. Samadi encourages each of his prostate cancer patients to explore the options that best suit their diagnosis, and he works closely with his colleagues to achieve the best results for each patient.

What's more, patients who opt for Dr. Samadi's SMART surgery are getting their very own team of specialists in one pair of hands. He is one of the only urologic oncologists in the world to have the three-in-one surgical expertise of open surgery, laparoscopic surgery, and robotic surgery.

When it comes to treating prostate cancer as a team, Dr. Samadi has access to radiation and medical oncology when needed. His preference, however, is to remove the cancerous prostate through robotic surgery and reserve radiation for as-needed follow-up therapy if the cancer recurs. Concludes Dr. Samadi, "It's important for men to know that surgery after radiation treatments such as HIFU and brachytherapy is very difficult, if not impossible."

Dr. David Samadi is Vice Chairman of the Department of Urology and Chief of Robotics and Minimally Invasive Surgery at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York.
