Study: Quality of Life After Prostate Cancer Treatment

NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwire - Jul 23, 2011) - Dr. David B. Samadi, Vice Chairman, Department of Urology, and Chief of Robotics and Minimally Invasive Surgery at The Mount Sinai Medical Center is a robotic prostatectomy and prostate cancer treatment expert whose patients are experiencing positive post-prostatectomy results. Despite the findings of a recent study published in the Journal of Urology indicating that men recovering from radical prostatectomy surgery are both disappointed in outcomes and unrealistic in their pre-surgery expectations, Dr. Samadi cautions that many factors drive these results. Of the 152 men surveyed one year post-surgery, only 36 percent indicated that their initial expectation for urinary function matched their true results, and only 40 percent said the same of sexual function. Urinary continence and sexual potency are important aspects on the road to prostatectomy recovery and Dr. Samadi maintains that success in these areas can be delivered by skilled robotic surgeons with expertise earned through extensive patient treatment experience.

This new study found that despite the counseling these men received prior to surgery, their expectations seemed impractical compared with the realities of prostate surgery recovery. Dr. Samadi urges patients to interpret the results carefully, noting that details are not provided regarding the method of prostatectomy -- laparoscopic or robotic -- nor the type of counseling that patients received pre-surgery.

Patients can never go wrong with a healthy dose of optimism, but Dr. Samadi asserts that, "Success in prostate cancer treatment is driven, first and foremost, by the right surgeon with the right tools, training and experience." Perhaps this study illuminates the fact that men don't want to believe these two critical functions will be negatively impacted, but the reality is that without the appropriate procedure and surgeon expertise, they may.

Employing the da Vinci System for robotic prostatectomy, Dr. Samadi has pioneered his very own SMART (Samadi Modified Advanced Robotic Technology) surgery. The enhanced vision and more precise angles of dissection it provides, in most cases, allow him to remove the prostate while sparing the surrounding nerves, thereby reducing the risk of damaged nerve bundles and arteries critical to blood flow. As a result, 96 percent of Dr. Samadi's patients regain urinary control and 87 percent regain sexual potency within 12 to 24 months.

"For most men recovering from prostate cancer, success is not measured in cure alone. Sexual function and urinary continence are of utmost importance to long-term physical and emotional wellbeing. Being considered cancer-free is not the only goal," recognizes Dr. Samadi.

Prostate cancer treatment
will always be determined on an individual basis and helping patients establish realistic, positive expectations is critical. However, patients should never settle when evaluating their options for treatment and recovery. "Selecting a surgeon who can deliver on all aspects of successful prostate cancer treatment is every patient's right," reminds Dr. Samadi who has performed over 3,300 successful prostate cancer procedures and has a cure rate of 97 percent. Technology alone is not the magic bullet; technology in the hands of experienced, skilled surgeons helps patients achieve the results they need for full recovery and positive quality of life.

It is now more than a week post-op and all is well (including path reports). Once again, I thank Dr. Samadi and all at Mount Sinai for the opportunity to be cared for by the best.?

"I was discharged from the hospital within 24 hours of being admitted and had my catheter removed in less than a week. I've had no obvious sign of blood loss since the surgery and no complications. Five days following the surgery, my wife and I were dancing at a wedding!"
